Let’s Reverse That

A music stand, surrounded by empty chairs.

A friend of mine teaches jazz to high school students. They’re lucky to have him as a teacher. He’s a remarkably talented composer and pianist, and he genuinely cares about his students.

Case in point: last week, one of students told him he would have to miss rehearsal because he was competing in a poetry slam. Rather than rehearse with one student absent, my friend canceled rehearsal altogether so the entire jazz band could surprise him by showing up in the audience.

Isn’t that so sweet? Such care. Such playfulness.

I hope we can be nimble in our own plans, making space for one another.
