My favorite season is summer. But as we turn the corner and move toward autumn, I do love to see the bright and colorful transformation of leaves. We’re currently at the beginning of peak color, and the leaves are glorious right now. Here we are in the third week of October, and I’m so grateful to observe this beauty.
At this time of year, I also tend to make a lot of meaning out of that transformation. There’s something wonderful about watching this vibrancy near the end, almost as if something at the core of these leaves is revealed in their final days.
But I also love imagining what happens beneath the surface — how the energy created through photosynthesis travels down into the tree’s roots. Even there, I know that energy will continue to go through some sort of transformation. But I like to think that something which once helped create those beautiful leaves remains, even after they are shed, somewhere at the core of the tree.
I am definitely projecting onto trees.
But I hope that’s true inside us, too. That even when we go through changes and losses and transformations, the past remains with us, especially our beloved ones. In our roots.
